Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector has emerged as a highly vibrant and dynamic sector of the Indian economy over the last five decades. MSMEs not only play crucial role in providing large employment opportunities at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries but also help in industrialization of rural & backward areas, thereby, reducing regional imbalances, assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth. MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and this sector contributes enormously to the socio-economic development of the country.

What is a MSME?

A manufacturing or service business is classified as MSME (Medium, Small and Medium Enterprises) as per the classifications defined by the govt. in the gazette of India.

These enterprises are classified into two divisions.

(1) Manufacturing enterprises

These enterprises are engaged in the manufacturing or production of goods in any industry.

(2) Service enterprises

These enterprises are engaged in providing services without producing any physical good of their own.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Definition

 The definition and criteria for classifying as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) was revised by the Government of India in 2020, under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006.
Initially, when the government introduced the MSME registration in 2006, the MSME classification was based on the investment criteria in plant and machinery or equipment. The government revised the MSME classification by inserting annual investment and annual criteria. Also, the distinction between the manufacturing and the services sectors under the MSME definition was removed.

What is Micro Enterprise?

A “Micro Enterprise” is defined as an enterprise having an investment in plant and machinery or equipment less than  ₹1 crore, with a turnover that does not surpass  ₹5 crore. These can be engaged in manufacturing, services, or trading businesses.

What is Small Enterprise?

A “Small Enterprise” is defined as an enterprise having an investment in plant and machinery or equipment that is less than  ₹10 crore , and the turnover does not exceed  ₹50 crore. These can also be involved in manufacturing, services, or trading activities.

What is Medium Enterprise?

A “Medium Enterprise” is defined as an enterprise having an investment in plant and machinery or equipment that is less than  ₹50 crore. The turnover does not go over  ₹250 crore. These can similarly be engaged in manufacturing, services, or trading activities.

Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises

The Ministry of MSME is the nodal ministry of the Government of Bharat for promoting and developing the MSME sector, including Khadi, Village, and Coir Industries. The Micro; Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act was notified in 2006 to address policy issues affecting MSMEs as well as the coverage and investment ceiling of the sector.
